Air Canada A321 XLR
Redefining the new ‘longhaul’ narrowbody experience
Air Canada partnered with Acumen Design Associates to define and deliver a new generation cabin interior for its Airbus A321XLR. The ambition was to create the next generation narrowbody experience and set the direction for the airline’s future cabin design strategy. Above all, it had to deliver a product ready for both transatlantic and transcontinental missions. The A321XLR would act as the bridge to Air Canada’s next widebody cabin programme, scheduled for 2027.

Design Objective
Designing for Warmth at 35,000 Feet
The primary goal was to evolve the airlines cabin interiors beyond the legacy ‘Dream Cabin’ by harmonizing the inflight experience with Air Canada’s modern brand identity and ‘Signature Suite’ lounges. In collaboration with Air Canada, Acumen developed an overarching design strategy that is defined as ‘Glowing Hearted.’ This concept translates authentic Canadian warmth into cabin architecture through softer geometries, organic forms, and a tactile CMF (Colour, Materials, and Finishes) palette that creates a richer, more inviting atmosphere.
Design Development
A Suite Designed Around Comfort
The centrepiece of the cabin is the Signature Class suite, based on the Collins Aerospace Aurora platform. Working closely with Air Canada, Acumen led a full customisation programme to refine layout, usability and spatial quality. Key innovations include a joggled suite wall that increases usable bed length while widening the aisle above waist height. This improves both comfort and flow without increasing the footprint. A sliding privacy panel supports social interaction between suites, while integrated features such as a leather wrapped side table, wireless charging and a discreet touchscreen enhance usability, featuring Panasonic’s active surface technology. Customer tested mock ups informed the key stages of development, ensuring the design delivered measurable improvements in comfort and perception of space.
A bespoke debossed pattern was developed to represent flight and feathers, derived from the Air Canada “mask” motif, and is integrated into the suite aisle walls and highlighted with soft accent lighting.
The scope also covered the customisation of the entrance area and forward galleys of the A321XLR. The bespoke combined front row galleys incorporate an angled trolley stowage which reduces the size of the monument and helps to improve the overall LOPA efficiency. Acumen was able to integrate the design of the galley entrance into a smooth and seamless transition into the cabin. The entrance ceiling also features a backlit canopy of maple leaves, for an unmistakably Canadian welcome for every customer as they board. The design of the Signature Class rear row monuments also gave the opportunity to incorporate, integrated curtain stowage areas and bespoke bulkheads for the front row economy passengers with sleek integrated wall mounted monitors and literature pockets.
In parallel the design team focused their attention on customising the Economy Class ‘Collins Meridian’ seat rear backshell and integration of the IFE screen and bespoke design for the lower lit pocket. To differentiate the ‘Preferred’ Economy seating, red fabric side boxing was added onto the seat back and an embroidered logo is detailed on the headrest.
CMF and Brand Expression
The Spirit of Canada in Every Detail
Air Canada and Acumen worked closely with the Airbus design team to embed the ‘Glowing Hearted’ CMF strategy across the full cabin environment. The approach combined intelligent use of Airbus offerable finishes, with a suite of bespoke elements including custom laminates, carpets, curtains and non-textile floor coverings. Every surface played a role in reinforcing the spirit of Canada.
In Signature Class, a light ecru suite shell increases the sense of space, layered with:
- Warm maple wood inspired details
- Natural stone finishes
- Earthier charcoal grey leathers with a soft, tailored feel
- Dark warm grey and deep red woven textiles create visual depth
- Subtle red ombre nomex fabric
- Mocha gold metallic details provide a premium accent
- Restrained use of Air Canada red within pockets and stowage areas.
At both ends of the cabin, linear metallic bronze laminates frame the cabin. Illuminated Air Canada brand signage adds a controlled glow, reinforcing the sense of warmth and arrival.
The warm palette flows into the economy cabin through warm grey woven fabric and a deep red accent fabric used to highlight the Preferred seating. The brand red accent is used within the seat back pockets on bulkheads and seat backs. The same charcoal grey leather and organic mottled grey carpet are used to create a holistic brand experience nose to tail.
The economy class cabin has a light warm grey linear laminate design at the rear of the cabin to contrast with the dark seat fabric. A darker grey linear design laminate is applied to the front bulkheads to balance the lighter coloured seat backs.
Natural stone laminates influenced by Canadian geographic elements are reflected in the lavatories and NTF flooring in business class and an abstract beech tree forest laminate pattern is used to differentiate the economy cabin lavatories.
The cabin lighting was also customised to bring the warmth of Air Canada’s ‘Glowing Hearted’ customer experience, ensuring that the mood lighting on the suite complemented the cabin lighting scenes. The entrance ceiling also features a backlit canopy of maple leaves, for an unmistakably Canadian welcome for every customer as they board.
The Result
A New Expression of Canadian Hospitality
The new A321XLR cabin signals a clear evolution for Air Canada. It replaces the cooler legacy aesthetic with a warmer, more contemporary environment shaped by the Glowing Hearted customer experience. The refined suite geometry improves privacy and spatial flow, while layered materials, natural inspired detailing and disciplined red accents create a richer, distinctly Canadian atmosphere. The result is a progressive narrowbody experience that aligns fully with Air Canada’s modern brand identity and sets the benchmark for the airline’s future fleet.
